There are two other signed versions of this subject (a busy market scene with meat and vegetable sellers, and a beggar in the foreground) by Francesco Bassano (in the Galleria Sabauda, Turin, and in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna). The densely-packed scene, teeming with people, animals, foodstuffs and objects, is characteristic of Francesco's overcrowded compositions.
